The ruling Trinamool Congress won the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district in the by-poll after a tough fight. TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy, a college professor, won the seat by over 4,000 votes defeating his nearest rival BJP’s Tapasi Roy, the widow of the CRPF jawan killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021. CPIM candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy, who was backed by the Congress, was in a distant third spot.
At the end of the final counting, Trinamool Congress candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy won with 4 thousand 313 votes. He got 96 thousand 961 votes. BJP candidate Tapasi Roy bagged 92 thousand 648 votes while Congress-supported CPIM candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy got 13 thousand 666 votes. It should be noted that bonds of all candidates except Trinamool Congress and BJP candidates have been forfeited. Following the win, Trinamool Congress supremo, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee thanked people of Dhupaguri assembly constituency for reposing faith and trust in them and helping win the party's candidate in the by-election. Polling for the seat took place on September 5 with a voter turnout of 78 percent.
Meanwhile, the BJP said that there was a need for self-assessment and fixing organizational gaps.
