Voting is underway in Ghana for the Presidential and Parliamentary elections. Some 18.7 million people are registered to vote in the West African country, which is grappling with one of the worst economic crises in a generation, leading to a major debt default. Polls will close at 10:30 PM Indian Time, with early results expected later tonight.
The first official results will be released by Tuesday. President Nana Akufo-Addo is stepping down next month after serving the two terms allowed by the constitution in Ghana. Twelve candidates are vying to succeed him, but the race is seen as primarily between Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the chosen successor of Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party, and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress. In recent years, Ghana has struggled with a profound economic crisis, including surging inflation and a lack of jobs.
