Vinesh Phogat disqualified from Paris Olympics for being overweight

In an unfortunate event for India at the Paris Olympics, wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling for being overweight by a few grams, after she stormed into the Olympic final. The Indian Olympics Association in a statement said, that despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. Earlier, Vinesh Phogat had beaten World No.1 and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan to qualify for the quarterfinals. Later in the quarter-finals, she defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 to secure a semi-final berth. In the penultimate bout, Vinesh went on to beat Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez and became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final at the Olympics. In women’s 53 kg freestyle wrestling, Antim Panghal lost to Turkiye’s Zynep Yetgil 10-0.

 

 

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Jyothi Yarraji advanced to the repechage round after finishing seventh in her heat.

 

In the women’s table tennis team quarterfinal, India lost to Germany 3-1.

 

In the Women’s Javelin Throw qualification event, Annu Rani failed to qualify for the finals. She ended her campaign in the 15th position, with a best throw of 55.81m.

 

In the marathon race walk mixed relay event, India’s Suraj Panwar and Priyanka Goswami did not finish the race. Goswami pulled out in the fourth and final leg of the race on Day 12 of the Summer Games.

 

 
In the Men’s Triple Jump qualification event at 10:45 PM tonight, Abdulla Narangolintevida and Praveen Chithravel will be looking to book their spot in the final.

 

In the Women’s Weightlifting 49kg category, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will be aiming for another medal at 11 PM tonight.

 

In the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase final, India will be hoping for a medal from Avinash Sable who qualified for the final after finishing fifth in the first round. The final is scheduled at 01:13 AM, IST, post-midnight.
