Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh today emphasized that India is not merely responding to the climate crisis but also shaping the global agenda with decisive action and innovative policies. Addressing the inaugural session of a conference titled ‘India 2047: Building a Climate-Resilient Future’ in New Delhi, the Minister said that India is marching towards the goal of Vikshit Bharat 2047-a future where development is not just about economic growth but also includes living in harmony with nature. Mr. Singh highlighted that the National Action Plan for Climate Change has driven transformative initiatives in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience. He added that the emission intensity of India’s GDP has reduced by 36 percent between 2005 and 2020 and the country is on its track to meet a 45 percent reduction target by 2030. The Minister further asserted that the country’s non-fossil fuel sources now contribute 37.1 percent to the total installed electricity generation capacity. Mr. Singh lauded that these achievements embody the vision of Panchamrit, or five nectars of climate action, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow.
The conference is being organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, in collaboration with two institutes at Harvard University. The four-day event aims to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog Suman Bery also joined the inaugural session. The conference will have several technical sessions focusing on adaptation and resilience of various themes. Themes include climate science and its implications on water and agriculture, health, work, and the built environment.
