Uttarakhand Lok Sabha Voter Turnout Reaches 53.56%, Falls Short of Target

The voter turnout on all five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand, in initial reports, has put pressure on political parties and candidates. Despite all efforts in campaigning and awareness, a significant number of voters in Uttarakhand did not step out of their homes. The result is that only 53.56 percent of voters exercised their franchise in the Lok Sabha elections. However, the Election Commission is still hopeful of further increase in voter turnout after the final figures come in.

In terms of voter turnout, there was a lower percentage on the state’s mountainous Lok Sabha seats compared to the plain seats, where voters showed more interest in voting. As per early reports, the voter turnout was 44.43 percent in Almora seat, 48.79 percent in Garhwal seat, 59.01 percent in Haridwar seat, 59.36 percent in Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar seat, and 51.01 percent in Tehri Garhwal seat.

The Election Commission had set a target of 75 percent voter turnout in Uttarakhand this time. In 2019, the voter turnout was 61.88 percent, but this time it is doubtful whether the target of 60 percent turnout on all five seats will be achieved.
