Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurates National Turmeric Board

In Telangana, the long cherished dream of the turmeric farmers in the state has become a reality with Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal inaugurating the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad yesterday. During the launch, held virtually, the minister emphasised that the Board will focus on improving productivity, developing superior varieties, and boosting exports of the ‘Golden Spice’. Highlighting the immense potential for turmeric cultivation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Mr Goyal said, the initiative will help enhance the welfare of turmeric farmers and provide them with targeted support and infrastructure.

Our correspondent reports the creation of the National Turmeric Board was initially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 during a public meeting in Telangana. Over the past decade, Nizamabad turmeric prices averaged six thousand rupees per quintal, but in 2024, prices surged to an all-time high of 18 thousand rupees per quintal. The National Turmeric Board will focus on research and development, infrastructure development like processing units, export promotion, and ensuring better pricing for farmers. The initiative is expected to strengthen the economy of North Telangana, particularly Nizamabad, and bolster India’s position in the global turmeric market.

Palle Ganga Reddy has been appointed as the first Chairperson of the National Turmeric Board.
