Union Minister Kiren Rijiju says India's weather forecasting systems are better than all systems worldwide

Minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju has said that the role of India Meteorological Department IMD is becoming critical in view of climate change. Briefing media after undertaking a visit to Mausam Bhavan in New Delhi today, Mr Rijiju said, country's weather forecasting systems are better than all systems worldwide. He said, the IMD forecast in the past few years have been accurate.

Lauding the IMD, the Minister said, it has done a tremendous job since 2014 and accurately tracked Cyclone Biparjoy due to which lives were saved. The Minister informed in the next three years, the number of Doppler radars in the country will be increased to 68. He said, currently there are 35 doppler radars in India. Replying to a media query, Mr Rijiju said, we cannot prevent disasters, but can mitigate them by following the warnings of IMD.
