United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, has warned that the shutting down of USAID will have an immediate impact on lifesaving activities. He said the UN is in touch with various agencies to assess the impact of USAID shutting down. The statement came after US President Donald Trump’s adviser and head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk, said that Trump had agreed to shut down USAID, the main agency for foreign assistance. According to a USAID inspector general report, 25 billion dollars was allocated to the UN and its agencies between 2019 and 2024, with 16.8 billion dollars going to the World Food Programme to address starvation from conflicts, famines, and natural disasters.
