UK prepared to support Ukraine with boots on ground, planes in air: British PM Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer outlined a four-point plan for a successful peace deal on Ukraine, stating that the UK is prepared to support it with “boots on the ground and planes in the air” alongside other European allies. He emphasized that any new agreement to support Ukraine must be backed by strength, with each nation contributing in the best way possible by taking responsibility and stepping up its share.

Speaking at the London summit yesterday, Starmer said that European leaders had agreed on four key steps. First, military aid to Ukraine must continue while the war is ongoing, and economic pressure on Russia should be increased. Second, any lasting peace must guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and security, with Ukraine having a seat at the table in all peace negotiations. Third, in the event of a peace deal, European leaders will work to deter any future Russian invasion of Ukraine. Fourth, a “coalition of the willing” will be formed to defend Ukraine and ensure lasting peace in the region. Starmer also announced a deal that will allow Ukraine to access approximately 2 billion dollars in export finance to purchase more than 5,000 air defence missiles.

The summit was attended by Türkiye’s foreign minister, the NATO secretary-general, and the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council.
