The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) sweeps the Puthupally bypoll today, as Chandy Oommen wins the seat with a lead of over 36,000 votes, leaving behind the LDF and NDA candidates. Puthupally constituency had stood with Chandy Ommen, the son of former Chief Minister and Congress leader Oommen Chandy, who had represented the constituency for a record 53 years at a stretch. This by-poll was necessitated by the passing of the veteran leader.
The constituency, located in Kottayam district, witnessed a war of words for the past few weeks as the September 5 by-election was a prestigious battle for both the ruling and opposition fronts in the state.
