Typhoon Yagi and the consequent landslides and floods have left 59 people dead and 247 missing in Vietnam’s northern region. Authorities reported that a steel bridge in Vietnam’s northern Phu Tho province collapsed this morning, causing 10 automobiles and two motorbikes to fall into the Red River, leaving 13 people missing. Due to the typhoon, 21 people were killed in Cao Bang province and 15 in Lao Cai province. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam today reported that the natural disasters damaged over 113,000 hectares of rice and more than 22,000 hectares of other crops, either damaged or swept away. According to the ministry, Typhoon Yagi was the strongest storm to hit Vietnam’s northern region in the past 30 years. It is one of the four Category-5 super typhoons recorded so far in the China Sea, alongside Pamela in 1954, Rammasun in 2014, and Rai in 2021.
