Typhoon Saola makes landfall in Hong Kong and China's Guangdong early today

Hundreds of flights cancelled and businesses, schools, and financial markets were shut as Typhoon Saola made landfall in most parts of Hong Kong and China's Guangdong early on Saturday. The weather agency has issued a warning of serious flooding. It said the water level may reach a historical record. More than 780,000 people were evacuated from high-risk areas in Guangdong.

The Hong Kong Observatory had issued a No. 10 hurricane alert, the highest warning under the city's weather system. It was the first No. 10 warning since Super Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong in 2018. Meanwhile, Rail authorities in mainland China halted all trains entering or leaving Guangdong province from Friday night to Saturday evening.
