Trump administration offers millions of federal workers buyouts through a deferred resignation programme

In the US, the Trump administration is offering millions of federal workers the chance to accept buyouts through a “deferred resignation” program if they resign by February 6. Those who take the offer will continue to receive pay and benefits until September 30.

The unprecedented initiative aims to streamline the federal workforce, as stated in an email sent to federal employees, which was seen by news agencies. The program applies to civilian federal employees, excluding those in immigration, national security-related roles, and US Postal Service positions. While the military and some agencies are expected to expand, the majority of federal agencies will likely face downsizing through restructurings and layoffs. The email also warned that continued employment could not be guaranteed for federal workers.

The program follows President Donald Trump’s executive orders shortly after his inauguration, which mandated federal employees return to the office full-time.
