In Kerala, thousands thronged the banks of river Periyar in Aluva since last evening to perform bali tharpan or pay obeisance to their forefathers, on the occasion of Shivaratri.
The ceremonies began after midnight pujas at the Mahadeva Temple situated on the river bed. The Travancore Devaswom Board had arranged 116 balitharas or platforms along the river bank for the devotees to perform bali tharpan. Arrangements for Bali tharpon were also made at the Adwaita Ashram across the river.
Special pujas were held at temples across the state to mark Shivaratri
