Maghi festival is the major festival of the Tharu community and is observed on the first day of Nepali month Magh. The Tharu Cultural Museum at Sundarharaicha municipality in Morang district in East Nepal is organising a weeklong Maghi Parva from January 14 to January 20.
The weeklong Maghi Parv that is being held in Sundarharaicha municipality in Morang, features Tharu dishes, handicrafts and locally produced goods. The event exhibits 40 industrial stalls and 30 food stalls, aiming to draw attention to Tharu culture, arts and crafts on both national and international platforms. At the festival, there are cultural performances by national and local artists as well as a Tharu cultural tableau parade and entertaining games. The festival is being organised to preserve and promote Tharu culture, tradition, customs and arts. Around 10,000 visitors on average are expected to visit the festival daily. The Tharu are an indigenous tribe that live in the Terai region of the lower Himalayas in both India and Nepal. In Nepal, the Tharu population is estimated to be 1.7 million residing in Terai region as per the latest census in 2021. In India, the Tharu live mainly in the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
