Maghe Sankranti is being celebrated throughout Nepal today. It is observed by taking a holy dip in rivers and ponds and savouring delicacies like ghee, yam, khichadi, and sweet haku. On this day, sunlight moves from the Tropic of Capricorn towards the Tropic of Cancer, and the days get longer and nights shorter from today. A large number of devotees throng Devghat, Barahchhetra, Ridi, Panauti, Dolalghat, and Kankai in Nepal to take a holy bath and perform Shraddha.
The Newar community of Nepal observes the festival as Ghyo Chaku Sallnhu by taking ghee, Chaku and remembering departed souls. On this day, the elderly apply mild-hot edible oil to the heads of young people in their families, blessing them with good health.
The Tharu and Magar communities are celebrating this festival as Maghi with much fanfare and gaiety. For the Tharu community, today is a New Year celebration. In Tundikhel, cultural events and a fair are organised. People are decked out in traditional dresses and have gathered to have a picnic together. The government of Nepal had declared Maghe Sankranti as a public holiday.
