Tenth Memorial day of Gorkha Earthquake Being Observed in Nepal

The tenth memorial day of the Gorkha Earthquake is being observed across Nepal with various programmes. On 25 April 2015, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the country with its epicentre at Barpak in Gorkha district. The earthquake killed a total of 9,079 people and injured 22,309 others. It damaged over 800,000 private houses and 1,500 cultural heritages across Nepal.

 

Districts including Gorkha, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Nuwakot, Dhading, Rasuwa, Makawanpur, Sindhuli and Okhaldhunga were affected the most by the quake. Observance of the quake memorial day aims to make people aware of earthquake safety and promote robust earthquake-resistant infrastructure development.

 

Likewise, a special event was organised at the premises of Dharahara, Sundhara, in Kathmandu today, where Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli inaugurated a memorial program. In the Gorkha district, which was the epicentre of the 2015 earthquake, CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairperson and former PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal inaugurated a photo exhibition on the earthquake by Photojournalist Prakash Timilsina.

 

On the occasion of the tenth memorial day of the Gorkha Earthquake, the President Ramchandra Paudel said that Nepal’s topography and human-made physical infrastructures were the key reasons behind the risks of the earthquake in the country. President Paudel drew the attention of all stakeholders towards public awareness dissemination on safety measures as well as the effective tools for the quake risk reduction.

Meanwhile, earthquakes jolted different parts of Nepal in two days. An earthquake with its epicentre at Phulpingkot of Sindhupalchowk district has been recorded today. The tremor measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale occurred at 11.57 am, according to the Earthquake Measurement and Monitoring Centre, Lainchaur. Earlier, an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale and its epicentre at Ranmamaikot had struck at 7.34 pm on Thursday in Rukum. The National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre stated that recent weeks have witnessed a series of earthquakes in the western part of Nepal.
