Tamil Nadu CM urges Centre to keep in abeyance new notification of restricting opening of new medical colleges

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin has urged the Union Government to keep in abeyance, the new notification of restricting the opening of new medical colleges issued by the Union Ministry of Health and family welfare. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Stalin said that the Government should initiate a consultative process immediately with the State Governments on the steps to address this issue. According to the regulation notified by the NMC, after academic year 2023-2024, the Letter of Permission will be issued only for an annual intake capacity of 50/100/150 seats.

Mr Stalin said that the new colleges should follow the ratio of 100 MBBS seats for ten lakh population in the States. He said that this was a direct encroachment on the rights of all State Governments and penalisation of States who have invested more in their public health infrastructure over the years. Stalin said that the doctor population ratio was higher in Tamil Nadu and the State had a sound health infrastructure comparatively. He said that still there are districts where the availability of doctors continues to be an issue.
