Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, the cultural arm of the High Commission of India in Colombo, observed Janjatiya Gaurav Divas and Lachit Divas, honouring Bhagwan Birsa Munda and Lachit Borphukan. Janjatiya Gaurav Divas marked the 150th birth anniversary of tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda, commemorating his fight against British colonial rule. Senior Professor K. Karunarathilaka from the University of Kelaniya delivered a lecture on the tribal communities’ contributions, while Chair Professor Upul Ranjith Hewawitanagamage highlighted Birsa Munda’s portrayal in Indian literature. Tributes were also paid to Lachit Borphukan, the Ahom commander while celebrating Lachit Divas. The Ahom commander had led the Ahom kingdom to victory against the Mughal Empire in the Battle of Saraighat. A lecture by Prof. Chaminda Padmakumara and a screening of the animated film Lachit: The Warrior, shed light on his leadership and patriotism. Director of the Centre, Prof. Ankuran Dutta, emphasised the significance of the contributions of both national heroes.
