This year’s most powerful storm, Super Typhoon Yagi made a landfall in northern Vietnam today after wreaking havoc in the Southern Chinese island province of Hainan. Two people lost their lives in Vietnam while in China’s Hainan two persons were reportedly killed and dozens injured.  The typhoon hit island districts of north Vietnam in the afternoon today and generated winds of up to 160 kilometre per hour near its centre. According to state media reports, a dozen people have gone missing at sea. A motorcyclist was killed after a tree fell on him in the northern Hai Duong province, while a body was recovered near the coastal city of Halong.

 

Vietnam’s coastal city of Haiphong was among the hardest hit with power outages and smashed windows. Reports say, upto three metre high waves were seen hitting the coast.

 

The Typhoon hit Hainan yesterday, which has a population of more than 10 million. The storm felled trees, flooded roads and cut power to more than 800,000 homes.

 

Yagi had already claimed 16 lives in the Philippines, the first country it hit earlier in the week.
