Super Typhoon Yagi Death Toll Reaches 82 in Vietnam, 64 Missing

In Vietnam, as of now, super typhoon Yagi and its subsequent floods and landslides in the northern region have claimed at least 82 lives while 64 others were missing. According to the ministry’s Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control, the mountainous province of Cao Bang has suffered the most with 19 deaths and 36 missing.  In a devastating turn of events the collapse of Phong Chau Bridge in the northern region resulted in several casualties. It said typhoon Yagi with powerful winds damaged 48,337 houses, mostly in the coastal province of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong city. 

 

Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the northern region is expected to see rising water levels today and tomorrow with several rivers reaching the highest alert level.   

 

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has announced 4 million dollars to support five typhoon-hit provinces.

 

The typhoon landed on Saturday on Vietnam’s northeastern coast, devastating a large swath of industrial and residential areas and bringing heavy rains that caused floods and landslides. It had previously hit the Philippines and the southern Chinese island of Hainan.

 

Yagi is one of the four Category-5 super typhoons recorded in the China Sea.
