In Philippines, a potentially catastrophic super typhoon, Man-Yi, has made landfall in Catanduanes in the Bicol region of Luzon. The state weather bureau said Man-yi, known locally as Pepito, touched down last night with maximum sustained wind speeds of 195 km. The bureau warned of a life-threatening storm surge, heavy rains and severe winds, More than 6.5 lakh people in coastal villages and flood-prone areas have been evacuated to safety. It said the intense downpour has destroyed crops and infrastructure. Many provinces declared a state of calamity due to the widespread devastation. The typhoon is expected to blow away to the South China Sea today night or tomorrow morning. Man-yi is approaching areas that have been hit hard by the five overlapping typhoons since last October. At least 160 people are known to have died in these five previous storms. An average of 20 typhoons hit the Philippines annually, bringing torrential rain, strong winds and deadly landslides.
