Domestic benchmark indices crashed over three per cent each today following extremely weak trends in global markets amid fears of a slowdown in the US economy. The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange tanked 2,686 points or 3.31 per cent to 78,296 in the afternoon trade. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange tumbled 824 points or 3.33 per cent to 23,894.

The rupee opened on a muted note and fell to an all-time low of 83 rupees 80 paise against the US dollar, registering a fall of 8 paise from its previous close.
