Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs says, Local Government Elections to be held early next year

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Vijitha Herath has said that the Local Government Elections will be held early next year.

Minister Herath made the statement when speaking to the media in Kandy today. The minister said that based on the Supreme Court’s decision in September this year, necessary measures will be taken to conduct the election soon.

Mr. Herath said that a discussion will be held with other political parties on whether or not to call for new nominations. Stating that steps will be taken to hold the Local Government Elections early next year, he added that a final decision on the date of the election is yet to be decided.

The Local Government polls were earlier scheduled for March 9, 2023, but were later postponed to April 25, 2023. However, the elections were not held after the government cited a lack of funds due to the country’s recovery from its economic crisis.
