Sri Lanka: Yoshitha Rajapaksa granted bail in money laundering case

In Sri Lanka, the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Yoshitha Rajapaksa, has been granted bail by Colombo Magistrate’s Court today morning. He was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over corruption allegations tied to a property purchase. The bail was granted against two surety bonds of 50 million Sri Lankan rupees.

Authorities had detained the former navy officer in Beliatta on Saturday as part of an investigation into the acquisition of land in Ratmalana near Colombo, allegedly involving 34 million rupees in illicit funds. The case falls under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, with Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manthunga confirming sufficient evidence to justify the arrest. The Attorney General has recommended legal action under the Code of Criminal Procedure, and further proceedings are underway.

The Rajapaksa family has faced increased scrutiny, with accusations of corruption, public criticism over their role in the country’s economic crisis, and waning political clout. Yoshitha’s arrest comes on the heels of police questioning former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa about a holiday home purchase in Kataragama. Mahinda Rajapaksa has also faced backlash over mounting government expenses for his government-allocated residence.
