Sri Lanka to hold Local Govt elections in April

In Sri Lanka, Local Government elections will be held in April. Cabinet spokesman Dr Nalinda Jayatissa told reporters yesterday that the dates for the polls will be announced soon.

 

The minister said that Sthe peaker has received the Supreme Court determination on the draft Bill regarding the re-conduct of the LG elections. He added that the draft bill will be taken up for debate after the Speaker announces the Supreme Court determination to Parliament.

 

The main opposition parties, the United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have agreed to contest the upcoming local government elections as a united front. The local government elections have been due since March 2022, to elect members to over 8700 seats in 340 local councils.
