Sri Lanka to hold local government elections on May 6th

Sri Lanka’s Election Commission has said that the much-delayed Local Government election will be held on May 6. The poll body announced after accepting nominations from political parties and independent groups. The polls to 340 local bodies, were scheduled to be held in January 2023. In the aftermath of the 2022 economic crisis, then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe declared lack of funds to hold the elections. The new government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake passed the Local Authorities Elections Bill last month with an overwhelming majority to hold the delayed polls and allow the Election Commission to withdraw the previous election.
