In Sri Lanka, the Election Commission has announced that the local council elections will be conducted soon after the conclusion of the parliamentary election. Issuing a statement, the Election Commission said that the Supreme Court had ordered that the local government elections be held following the presidential election.
After emerging victorious in recent presidential elections, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the executive president, dissolved the Parliament eleven months in advance, paving the way for the parliamentary election in November. The local government polls were scheduled to be held in March last year but were not held as the government cited a lack of funds due to the country’s recovery from its economic crisis.
