In Sri Lanka, the Election Commission has released information on seat allocations for Sri Lanka’s 2024 parliamentary election to be held on 14th of November. Among the 22 electoral districts, Gampaha has been assigned the most seats at 19, which is one more than the previous election, while 4 seats have been assigned to Trincomalee, which is the least.
The parliamentary elections follow a combination of provincial seats, electoral district seats, and national list seats to take the total house strength to 225. The system, which was introduced by the 1978 Constitution, allows for proportionate representation. In each district, the political party securing the highest number of votes is entitled to have one member declared elected. The remaining number of members is declared elected on the basis of the proportion of votes obtained by the political party.
Further, the poll body has sought Rs. 11 billion from the Treasury to conduct the general election. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved Parliament on Tuesday night, declaring a snap general election to be conducted on the 14th of November.
