In Sri Lanka, the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) alliance leaders are set to meet the Election Commission today to discuss preparations for the upcoming Local Government elections. The NPP delegation, led by Secretary Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, is expected to outline their concerns and strategies.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) held a special discussion yesterday, with MP Namal Rajapaksa stating that the party is gearing up for the polls. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has urged the Election Commission to initiate the election process after the final vote on the 2025 Budget on 21st March.
Earlier this week, the Parliament unanimously passed the Local Authorities Elections (Special Provisions) Bill, under which, the Election Commission must now announce a nomination date within three months. The government and opposition collaborated on this amendment, which is expected to end delays in local council elections.
