The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has decided to delay announcing the upcoming Local Government Elections until after the Advanced Level examinations. The exams were rescheduled to early December due to adverse weather conditions on the island due to Cyclone Fengal.
A meeting of party leaders, chaired by Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake, will take place on Tuesday to finalise decisions regarding election nominations. Political parties have cancelled the nominations made previously as some candidates switched parties, left the country, or retired from politics. The election commission is expected to announce key election dates later this week.
The polls to elect councillors to 340 local councils for a four-year term have been postponed since March 2022 due to the economic crisis. In August this year, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka ordered the Election Commission to take measures to hold the postponed Local Government Elections immediately.
