Sri Lanka continues to face severe weather conditions due to the deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal. The death toll due to adverse weather has risen to 12 in the island nation while 2 are reported missing.
The Disaster Management Centre reports that over 3.3 lakh people across 23 districts have been severely affected.
As per the Meteorology Department, the depression was located 110 km northeast of Trincomalee at around 5:30 this morning. It is expected to move slowly north-northwestward, closer to Sri Lanka’s east coast, and intensify into a cyclonic storm.
Over 2,7000 people have taken refuge in 267 safety shelters, while over 61,000 have relocated to the homes of relatives. More than 1,700 houses have been partially or completely damaged due to the inclement weather so far.
Landslide warnings have been issued in nine districts effective until 7:00 p.m. today.
Relief efforts are underway, with 2700 personnel from the tri-forces deployed to assist affected communities. The adverse weather is predicted to persist, with more rainfall expected in the next 24 hours.
