In Sri Lanka, the cabinet has approved amending the Local Government Act to allow fresh nominations to be called for the Local Government Election. Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told the media today that cabinet approval was granted to cancel the nominations that were received in 2023.
Minister Jayatissa added that the proposal to call fresh nominations was made as some candidates who had previously submitted nominations have changed parties, passed away, or left the country.
He further revealed that a common consensus was also reached at the recent Party Leaders meeting to call for fresh nominations for the Local Government Election.
The polls to elect councillors to 340 local councils for a four-year term were scheduled to be held in March 2022 but have been postponed due to the economic crisis. In August this year, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka ordered the Election Commission to take measures to hold the postponed Local Government Elections immediately.
