Sri Lanka’s Election Commission has revealed that 107 registered political parties and 49 independent groups have submitted their nominations. The acceptance of nominations for the 2025 local government election concluded yesterday. Approximately 8,500 individuals across 340 councils are set to be elected to local government institutions in the upcoming election, where 17.3 million voters will exercise their franchise.

It is noteworthy that this year, nominations submitted by many recognised political parties and independent groups had been rejected for various reasons. Meanwhile, the National Election Commission said that the names of candidates for the upcoming local government election will be announced through a Gazette notification within the next week.
