In South Korea, the national police chief and the top police officer for Seoul have been detained over their enforcement of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived martial law decree last week. The development comes hours before the main liberal opposition Democratic Party submitted a new motion to impeach President Yoon over the introduction of martial law.
The party plans to bring the motion to a floor vote on Dec 14. If impeached, President Yoon’s powers would be suspended until the Constitutional Court decides whether to reinstate him or remove him from office. Should he be dismissed, a new presidential election would be required. Earlier, former Defence Minister Kim Yong Hyun was arrested after a Seoul court approved an arrest warrant against him. He faces allegations of playing a central role in the rebellion and abusing his power. President Yoon narrowly avoided impeachment on Dec 7 when most lawmakers from the governing party boycotted a floor vote in the National Assembly.
