Sixth anniversary of Rohingya influx in Bangladesh; Human rights and Security threats

For six years, more than one million Rohingya have been struggling to survive in various refugee camps in Cox's Bazar and other areas of Bangladesh. Today is the sixth anniversary of the Rohingya influx into Bangladesh following a brutal crackdown by Myanmar's military on them in Rakhine state.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Thursday said the international community must not forget the Rohingya people or their host community in Bangladesh in the face of competing crises. He said Rohingya should be able to return to their home with dignity and without any pressure.

Apart from human rights issues, now the rohingya crisis is becoming a security threat too.  Apprehensions over rise in terrorist activities and tension between the host community and Rohingya refugees are looming large. Media reports show that many incidents of violence and involvement of certain Rohingya  elements in terrorist  and drug trafficking activities are very common.

According to security experts, if the Rohingya crisis is not handled in time, it will be difficult for the law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh to check illegal activities and it will affect the neighbouring countries too.

In light of insufficient international aid and support, the Bangladesh Government is pressing hard for the repatriation of Rohingyas. However, Bangladesh's efforts till have not yielded . According to Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen, some international organisations are hindering the repatriation process as they are in favour of integration of Rohingyas into Bangladesh society.
