Singapore has passed a new law to safeguard racial harmony and protect against foreign interference. The legislation requires race-based groups, such as clan and business associations, to disclose foreign donations and empowers authorities to act against content that threatens racial harmony.
Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam emphasized that racial harmony is a cornerstone of Singapore’s society. The law includes measures like restraining orders for harmful content and community programs for minor offences to repair social ties. The Minister assured the public that free speech will not be stifled, noting similar laws have rarely needed enforcement. Safeguards, including oversight by a Presidential Council, are in place to ensure judicious use of these powers.
