Sikkim Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Samdup Lepcha pays homage to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on National Sports Day

As part of National Sports Day celebration, Sikkim’s sports and youth affairs department today honoured sports personalities at a programme with the theme ‘Sports are an enabler to an inclusive and fit society’ in Gangtok. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Samdup Lepcha paid homage to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and said that the state government has completed pending projects of sports infrastructure, created new infrastructure, and has been providing all support to sportspersons including cash incentives and facilities. He urged sportspersons to utilise these facilities to make a successful career in sports.

Principal of Eklavya Model Residential School, Gangyap, Siddharth Yonzon was felicitated for his contribution to promoting basketball while Marathon Man Amar Subba was recognized for his achievements in long-distance running. The sports and youth affairs department honoured Everester Kalpana Maharjan from Nepal, who is the first female journalist to conquer Mount Everest, and Taekwondo coach Trilok Subba and his student Ugen Gurung for their accomplishment in the recent 16th World Taekwondo Culture Expo held in South Korea. National Sports Day was also celebrated in other districts.
