Severe Flooding in North-Central US Claims Lives

In the United States, at least two persons were killed and hundreds rescued as floods hit the north-central part of the country. A vast swath of land from eastern Nebraska and South Dakota to Iowa and Minnesota has been flooded due to torrential rains since last week, damaging homes and roads. Floods breached levees in the northwestern part of Iowa yesterday, prompting evacuations of local residents. Severe thunderstorms also left more than 150,000 homes and businesses in Michigan without power. Flood warnings are expected to continue throughout the week.

US President Joe Biden has declared a major disaster in the state of Iowa and ordered federal aid to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in areas affected by severe storms and flooding.
