Seven killed after major fire breaks out at seven-storey residential building in Mumbai; PM Modi announces an ex-gratia

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said that proper treatment is being provided to patients who were injured in the Goregaon fire incident early this morning. Speaking to reporters, after visiting the injured at Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Center in Mumbai, Mr. Shinde said all patients are stable and out of danger.

Terming the fire incident as unfortunate, Mr. Shinde said an inquiry commission has been set up and the guilty will be brought to book. Stating that scrap material and unused clothes were found in the premises which may have led to the spread of fire, the Chief Minister said the civic body has been instructed to conduct a fire audit to avoid such incidents in the future.

A blaze was reported at 3.05 am at Jay Bhavani building, a seven-storey Slum Rehabilitation Authority building, located near Azad Maidan in Goregaon West. The incident claimed seven lives, leaving 40 others injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees for the kin of the deceased and fifty thousand rupees for the injured.

Maharashtra Government has also announced an aid of 5 lakh rupees to the families of those who have lost their lives and to bear the cost of treatment for all those injured.
