Sensex Sinks 1,018 Points, Nifty Falls 310

Benchmark domestic equity indices today plunged 1.32 percent each as US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports dampened market sentiments. This marks the fifth consecutive day of declines for both indices. The 30-share index at the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, slumped 1,018 points to close at 76,294. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange Nifty-50 fell 310 points to settle at 23,072. The broader market indices at BSE witnessed intense selling pressure.

The Mid-Cap index slipped over 2.8 percent, and the Small-Cap index shed 3.4 percent. In the Sensex index, 29 out of 30 companies ended in logged losses, except Bharti Airtel, which added almost 0.2 percent. In the top laggards, Zomato tanked over 5.2 percent, Tata Steel slipped over 2.9 percent, and Bajaj Financial Services fell 2.7 percent. In sectoral indices at the BSE, all 21 sectors ended down. In top laggards, Realty shed 3.14 percent, Industrials lost over 2.8 percent, and Healthcare fell over 2.7 percent.

The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as shares of 3,478 companies declined and 525 advanced while 94 remained unchanged. At the National Stock Exchange, 18 companies hit their 52-week high while 407 hit their 52-week low.
