Sensex rises 592 points to close at 81,973; Nifty gains 164 points

The domestic benchmark indices today ended with gains of more than half a per cent. The BSE Sensex climbed 592 points to close at 81,973 and the NSE Nifty ended with an uptick of 164 points to settle at 25,128.

 

The broader market at Bombay Stock Exchange also ended in positive territory. The Mid-Cap index rose 0.2 percent while the Small-Cap index ended marginally up 0.06 percent.

 

In the Sensex index, 20 out of 30 companies ended with gains. In the top gainers, Tech Mahindra climbed 2.8 per cent, HDFC Bank gained 2.3 per cent and Larsen and Toubro added over two per cent. Conversely, in the laggards, Maruti lost over 1.8 per cent, Tata Steel fell nearly one and a half per cent and Bajaj Finance shed 1.2 per cent.

 

In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 16 out of 20 sectors logged gains. In the top gainers, Realty rose more than one and a half per cent, Bankex and Information Technology, both gained over one per cent each, and Financial Services as well as Teck added 0.8 per cent each. In the top laggards, Commodities declined 0.3 per cent, Metal slipped 0.1 per cent, and Oil and Gas was marginally down 0.06 per cent.

 

The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,069 companies advanced 1,972 declined while 154 remained unchanged.

 

At the National Stock Exchange, 94 companies hit their 52-week high while 19 hit their 52-week low.
