Sensex, Nifty down for 6th consecutive session

Domestic benchmark indices, Nifty and Sensex, ended lower for the sixth consecutive session today. Despite a positive start, Indian markets were unable to hold their early gains due to pressure from weak global trends, a rising dollar index, and continued foreign investor selling.

At close, the Sensex was down 110 points or 0.14 percent at 77,580 and the Nifty was down 26 points or 0.11 percent at 23,532 a short while ago.

However, the broader market at the BSE traded higher, with the small-cap index rising by 0.83 percent and the mid-cap index gaining 0.41 percent.

In the Sensex index, 20 out of 30 companies logged losses. In the top laggards, Hindustan Unilever lost over three percent, Nestle India shed 2.3 percent and NTPC lost 2.19 percent.

Conversely, among top gainers, Reliance increased 1.23 percent, Kotak Bank rose 1.18 percent and Tech Mahindra gained 0.78 percent.

In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 9 out of 20 sectors ended the trade in negative territory. In the top laggards, FMCG declined 1.35 percent, utilities dropped 0.88 percent and oil and gas shed over 0.45 percent. Meanwhile, among the top gainers, the Realty sector increased by over one percent, Consumers added 0.81 percent and Telecommunication gained 0.64 percent.

The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,145 companies advanced and 1,813 declined while 92 remained unchanged.

At the National Stock Exchange, 31 companies hit their 52-week high while 148 hit their 52-week low.
