The domestic benchmark indices today closed in RED as the BSE Sensex lost 494 points to close at 81,006 and the NSE Nifty ended with 221 points down to settle at 24,749. The broader market the BSE midcap and smallcap indices shed more than 1 per cent each.
In the Sensex index, 09 out of 30 companies ended in negative territory. In the laggards, Nestle and Mahindra Mahindra both lost 3.3 per cent each; Ultra Tech shed 2.7 per cent and Bajaj Finance fell 2.2 per cent. Conversely, in the top gainers, Infosys increased 2.5 per cent, Tech Mahindra gained 2.3 per cent and Power Grid added 1.3 per cent. In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 18 out of 20 sectors logged losses. In the top laggards, Realty declined by 3.7 per cent, Auto slipped by 3.4 per cent, and Consumer Discretionary was down by 2.45 per cent. In the top gainers, Information Technology added 1.1 per cent and Teck rose 0.5 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as shares of 1,272 companies advanced and 2,890 declined while 102 remained unchanged.
