Sensex falls 241 points, Nifty ends below 23,500

Domestic benchmark equity indices today ended with losses amid mixed global cues, extending their losing streak to the seventh consecutive session. The 30-share BSE Sensex shed 241 points, or 0.31 per cent, to close at 77,339, while the NSE Nifty50 slipped 79 points, or 0.34 per cent, to settle at 23,454. 
 
 
The broader market at the Bombay Stock Exchange also ended in negative territory. The Mid-Cap index fell 0.17 per cent and the Small-Cap index lost over half per cent.  
 
 
In the Sensex index, 16 out of 30 companies logged losses. In the top laggards, TCS tumbled over three per cent, Infosys shed over 2.8 per cent and NTPC fell over one and a half per cent. Conversely, among the top gainers, Tata Steel increased by over 2.3 per cent, Hindustan Unilever rose 1.4 per cent and Mahindra and Mahindra gained over 1.3 per cent. 
 
 
In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 11 out of 20 sectors ended with losses. In the top laggards, Information Technology declined over 2.3 per cent, Focused IT dropped over 2.2 per cent, and Teck shed nearly two per cent. Meanwhile, among the top gainers, Metal advanced over 2.1 per cent, FMCG as well as Realty gained over 0.6 per cent and Auto added over half per cent. 
 
 
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as shares of 1,611 companies advanced and 2,486 declined while 127 remained unchanged. At the National Stock Exchange, 42 companies hit their 52-week high while 187 hit their 52-week low.
