Domestic Benchmark indices, the Sensex and the Nifty fell over a percent as ongoing tensions in West Asia kept investors risk-appetite subdued.
At close, BSE Sensex was down 845 points or 1.14 percent at 73,399 and the Nifty was down 247 points, or 1.10 percent, to settle at 22,272.
From the Sensex basket, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation, Hindalco Industries, Maruti Suzuki India, Nestle India, Britannia Industries and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries stood among the top gainers.
On the other hand, Bajaj Finserv, Wipro, UPL Ltd, ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Adani Enterprises, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Tata Motors closed in the red.
In the broader market at the BSE, Midcap index declined 1.5 percent and smallcap index fell 1.54 percent.
