The Supreme Court today asked the Delhi-NCR states to immediately set up teams to enforce GRAP 4 restrictions, as Delhi-NCR chokes under severe-plus air quality amid dense fog. The court said that the restrictions will remain in effect even if the AQI is below 450. The Court also asked the governments of Delhi and adjoining states to take an immediate call on stopping physical classes up to class 12. The Supreme Court had pulled up the Delhi government for not implementing the firecracker ban and called for an affidavit from the Delhi government and the Police Commissioner detailing the steps taken to enforce the ban. It had asked the Delhi government as well as the Delhi Police to highlight the steps they propose to take to mitigate pollution next year. A bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih said it is the constitutional duty of all states to ensure that all citizens live in a pollution-free environment. Listing the matter for hearing on Friday, the bench said that all possible actions should be taken by the concerned state governments to bring down the severe Air Quality Index.
