Sankar Subramanian beats world no. 2 Antonsen in Swiss Open

In badminton, India’s Sankar Subramanian has stormed into the Men’s Singles quarterfinals of the Swiss Open Championship in Basel, Switzerland. Subramanian, ranked 64th in the world, defeated the current World No. 2, Anders Antonsen of Denmark, 18-21, 21-12, 21-5. He will next take on Christo Popov of France in the quarterfinals today.

 

In Women’s Doubles, India’s Treesa Jolly and her partner Gayatri Gopichand have also entered the quarterfinals. The top Indian women’s doubles pair secured a straight-game victory over Germany’s Amelie Lehmann and Selin Hubsch, winning 21-12, 21-8. They will next face Hong Kong China’s eighth-seeded pair, Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam, for a place in the semifinals today.

 

All other Indian players lost their pre-quarterfinal matches in their respective categories. In Men’s Singles, ace shuttler Kidambi Srikanth suffered a meek defeat against China’s World Number 6, Li Shi Feng, 15-21, 11-21. Meanwhile, compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat lost to France’s Toma Popov, 15-21, 17-21. In Women’s Singles, Anupama Upadhyaya faced a straight-game defeat against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani, 17-21, 19-21, while Isharani Baruah fell short against China’s Han Qianxi, 19-21, 21-18, 18-21. In Mixed Doubles, the Indian pair of Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyatth also lost to Taiwan’s K. Liu and Y. Jheng, 14-21, 16-21.
