Russia takes emergency measures in border regions after Ukraine incursion

In response to a Ukrainian incursion in Kursk, Russia has introduced anti-terrorism measures in the Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk regions bordering Ukraine. According to media reports, the measures taken by the National Anti-Terrorism Committee include the possible evacuation of residents, limits on transport in specific areas, tightened security around sensitive sites, and wiretapping of telephone and other communications. The statement said the decision was in response to Ukraine’s unprecedented attempt to destabilize the situation in several regions. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that it was continuing to repel Ukraine’s military, which it claimed had lost more than 280 personnel.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the Ukrainian incursion in Kursk as a large-scale provocation by Ukraine. Russian authorities had already declared a federal-level state of emergency in Kursk. According to a report, Ukrainian troops are operating more than 10 km inside Russia, marking the deepest advance by Kyiv since Moscow launched its special military operations against Ukraine in February 2022.
