Russia and Ukraine have conducted the largest prisoner exchange of the war today since beginning of the conflict between both nations in February 2022. This happened during a short Easter ceasefire declared by Putin. Around 500 soldiers were freed, including some who were injured. The United Arab Emirates helped broker this deal. This exchange took place while peace talks between the two countries remain stalled. The ceasefire provided a brief pause in hostilities, allowing both sides to focus on humanitarian efforts. The release of prisoners is seen as a positive step, even though it does not resolve the ongoing conflict. Both nations have been engaged in a prolonged and difficult war.
Many families are relieved to have their loved ones back home. The exchange has brought some hope to those affected by the conflict. However, the larger issues between Russia and Ukraine remain unresolved, with peace talks showing little progress.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry accused Ukraine of breaking the 30-hour Easter ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin. On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia has continued attacking Ukraine despite announcing a unilateral Easter truce. Zelenskyy reiterated his proposal to extend the ceasefire for 30 days to give peace a chance.
